भगवान श्रेयांसनाथ तीर्थंकर के जन्म एवं चार कल्याणकों के कारण यह प्रागैतिहासिक काल से जैन तीर्थ रह रहा है। यहां उनके गर्भ, जन्म, दीक्षा और केवलज्ञान ये चार कल्याणक थे। तीर्थंकर श्रेयांसनाथ जी का जन्म स्थान होने के कारण ही इस स्थान का नाम ''सारनाथ'' पड़ा है। सारनाथ में भगवान विष्णु का एक प्राचीन दिगम्बर जैन मंदिर है। मंदिर के गर्भगृह में तीर्थंकर श्रेयांसनाथ जी की मूर्ति है, जिसमें फिट हाई श्याम वर्ण की मनोज्ञ प्रतिमा है। वेदी के आगे एक छोटी श्वेतवर्ण की श्रेयांसनाथ की प्रतिमा है। भगवान की वेदियाँ अत्यंत कलापूर्ण हैं। मुख्यवेदी के बगल में नंदीश्वर जिनालय का फलक है जिसमें 60 प्रतिमाएं बनी हुई हैं। यह भूगर्भ से प्राप्त हुई है। भारत सरकार की ओर से मंदिर के कंपाउंड से पुष्पोदय बनाया गया है। इस पवित्र भूमि पर अब सरकारी अधिकार हो गया है।

It has been a Jain pilgrimage since prehistoric times due to the birth and four Kalyanaks of Lord Shreyansnath Tirthankar. Here he had four Kalyanaks - Garbha, Janma, Diksha and Kevaljnana. This place is named 'Sarnath' because it is the birthplace of Tirthankar Shreyansnath ji. There is an ancient Digambar Jain temple of Lord Vishnu in Sarnath. There is a statue of Tirthankar Shreyansnath ji in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, which has a beautiful black colored statue of 10 feet high. There is a small white colored statue of Shreyansnath in front of the altar. The altars of the Lord are very artistic. Next to the main altar is the panel of Nandishwar Jinalaya in which 60 statues are made. It was found from the underground. Pushpodaya has been made in the temple compound by the Government of India. This holy land is now under the government's control.
